From Pyrzowice Airport into Silesia and the Beskids. How to get around the region efficiently?

You land at Katowice-Pyrzowice Airport (KTW). A modern terminal welcomes you, along with the knowledge that you're in the heart of one of Poland's most intriguing regions. On one side awaits the dynamic, post-industrial Silesian agglomeration, full of business centres, unique industrial heritage sites and a vibrant cultural scene. On the other, just an hour's drive south, rise the picturesque peaks of the Beskids, offering respite and a connection with nature.

How do you combine these two worlds? How do you efficiently move between meetings in Gliwice and an afternoon stroll in Wisła? The answer is simple and has four wheels. In a region where distances are significant and public transport between cities can be challenging, renting a car at Katowice Airport is not a luxury – it's the smartest logistical decision you can make.

This article is more than a map. It's your personal guide, leading you through the key routes, explaining the specifics of local roads and advising you on how to plan your trip to make the most of this extraordinary place.

Why is a car the key to Silesia and the Beskids?

Before we get into specific routes, let's understand why a car gives you superpowers in this particular region:

  • The agglomeration is not one city: Silesia is a conurbation of more than a dozen cities that blend seamlessly into one another. Trying to get between Katowice, Zabrze, Gliwice and Tychy by public transport means wasting precious time on connections. A car lets you fit three meetings in three different cities into a single morning.
  • Freedom to reach the mountains: Getting to the Beskids without a car is possible, but very time-consuming and problematic, especially with luggage or ski equipment. A car gives you the freedom to choose – you can go straight to Szczyrk and spontaneously stop at a charming inn in Bielsko-Biała along the way.
  • Time efficiency: It's about 30 km from Pyrzowice Airport to the centre of Katowice. A taxi is expensive, and the bus takes considerably longer. By picking up a car straight after landing, you are in control of your time from the very first minute.

Starting point: Pyrzowice Airport and main arterial roads

At YourRent we believe a trip should be comfortable from the very start. That's why instead of making you search for our office in a busy terminal, we come to you.

  • Shuttle pick-up: After landing and collecting your luggage, our driver will be waiting for you at an agreed pick-up point. A comfortable shuttle bus will take you on a short, few-minute journey to our office, located right next to the airport.
  • Relaxed formalities: In our office, away from the airport bustle, you can complete all the paperwork at a leisurely pace. It's the perfect moment to ask any questions about the route or the vehicle.
  • Ready to go: Once everything is done, you collect the keys to a perfectly prepared car and hit the road, with direct access to the region's key arterial roads: Motorway A1 and Expressway S1.

Getting around the Silesian agglomeration

Let's say your goal is meetings or sightseeing in the heart of the region. Your main navigational tool will be an extraordinary road you won't find anywhere else in Poland.

Drogowa Trasa Średnicowa (DTŚ) – your motorway through the heart of Silesia

You need to get to know and love the DTŚ (designated regional road No. 902). It's an absolutely unique, multi-lane arterial road that connects the most important cities of the agglomeration like a circulatory system: Katowice, Chorzów, Świętochłowice, Ruda Śląska, Zabrze and Gliwice.

How does the DTŚ work?

Think of it as a motorway running through the middle of cities. It is almost collision-free, and the exits lead you straight to their centres.

Practical tips:

  • Navigation is essential: Use Google Maps or Waze. The DTŚ has many exits, and your navigation will point you to the right one precisely.
  • Watch the speed limits: On many sections the limit is 80 km/h, and speed cameras as well as average-speed checks are not uncommon.

Routes from our office to key cities:

  • Getting to Katowice (approx. 30–40 minutes): From us, head towards the S1 road, then take Motorway A1. Exit at the "Pyrzowice" junction and continue south on the A1. Then take the S86 road, which will take you straight to the heart of Katowice.
  • Getting to Gliwice (approx. 35–45 minutes): You get onto Motorway A1 right next to us and drive straight south to the Gliwice exits.
  • Getting to Zabrze (approx. 30–40 minutes): Similar to Gliwice, take Motorway A1 but exit slightly earlier, following signs for Zabrze.

How to plan a trip to the Beskids?

Had enough of the city hustle? Time to head to the mountains. Getting to the Beskids from Pyrzowice is surprisingly simple and quick.

Main route: Pyrzowice -> Bielsko-Biała -> Wisła/Szczyrk

  • From our office, take the S1 expressway heading south (signs for Tychy/Bielsko-Biała).
  • The S1 road smoothly transitions into national road No. 1 (DK1).
  • After approximately 60–70 minutes of driving you will reach Bielsko-Biała, the "gateway to the Beskids".

Your mountain destinations:

  • Bielsko-Biała (approx. 1h 10 min from us): Before heading higher, stop here. Take the gondola up to Szyndzielnia or stroll around the charming town square.
  • Szczyrk (approx. 1h 30 min from us): From Bielsko-Biała, head along road 942. A mecca for skiers in winter and mountain hikers in summer.
  • Wisła (approx. 1h 40 min from us): From Bielsko-Biała, take the S1 towards Cieszyn, then exit onto road 941. The perfect place for a more relaxed break.

Practical tips for mountain routes:

  • Choose the right car: If you're planning a winter trip, consider renting an SUV for better traction. Check the weather: Mountain weather can change rapidly. Always check the forecast before you set off.
  • Be prepared for hairpin bends: Roads in the Beskids can be winding and steep. Drive with care.
