You land in Vilnius. You walk out of the terminal and feel that unique atmosphere – a blend of Baroque architecture, artistic bohemia and dynamic, modern energy. The Lithuanian capital is a city that draws you in and fascinates you. But the real magic of Lithuania begins where the cobbled streets of the Old Town end. There are picturesque lakes, medieval castles and vast, green forests.
To experience all of this, you need one thing – car keys. Car rental in Vilnius is not a luxury, it is the smartest decision you can make. It gives you the freedom to explore at your own pace, to stop wherever a view takes your breath away, and to reach places that standard guidebooks never mention.
However, driving in a new country is always a small challenge. Different rules, an unfamiliar parking system, the specifics of local roads. That is exactly why we created this guide. It is your complete essential companion that will make getting around Vilnius and its surroundings simple, stress-free and fully comfortable.
Starting point: From Vilnius Airport (VNO) straight to your destination
You have picked up the keys to your car at our desk. You are ready to go. The good news is that Vilnius Airport is located very close to the city centre, and the drive is straightforward and quick.
- Main route to the city centre (approx. 15–20 minutes): From the airport you head onto Dariaus ir Girėno Street, which smoothly merges into one of the city's main arteries – Geležinio Vilko. This is a wide, multi-lane road that will take you almost to the very heart of Vilnius. Use navigation (Google Maps or Waze work perfectly here) and you will reach your hotel without any difficulty.
Lithuanian roads are in good condition and the driving culture is similar to that in Poland. There are, however, a few key differences you need to remember to avoid fines and travel safely.
- Headlights 24/7: This is an absolute must. In Lithuania, driving with dipped headlights is required all year round, 24 hours a day, both in built-up areas and outside them. Switch them on as soon as you start the engine and turn them off only when you park.
- Speed limits: They are very close to European standards, but it is worth memorising them: Built-up areas: 50 km/h Outside built-up areas: 90 km/h Expressways: 110 km/h Motorways: 130 km/h (in summer, from April to October). In winter the motorway limit is reduced to 110 km/h.
- Blood alcohol limit: The permitted level is 0.4‰. However, this limit applies to experienced drivers. For drivers with less than 2 years of experience and professional drivers the limit is 0.0‰.
- Mobile phone use: Talking on a phone held in your hand while driving is strictly prohibited. Use a hands-free kit or the speakerphone function on your phone.
- Pedestrians at crossings: In Lithuania, drivers show great respect to pedestrians. When approaching a crossing where a pedestrian is present, you are absolutely required to stop and give way.
- GREEN ARROW – WARNING, IT'S A TRAP! This is the most important, unique rule. If a green arrow pointing right is lit alongside a red light, it does NOT mean a conflict-free right turn. It means you may conditionally turn right, but only after stopping and yielding to EVERYONE – both vehicles on the cross street and pedestrians crossing.
Parking in Vilnius is well organised, but you need to understand its logic. The city centre is divided into four paid parking zones, colour-coded.
- Blue (Mėlynoji): The most expensive zone, covering the strict Old Town area. Parking is paid here every day of the week, usually from 08:00 to 24:00.
- Red (Raudonoji): Covers the area around the Old Town. Paid from Monday to Saturday, usually from 08:00 to 22:00.
- Yellow (Geltonoji): Further into the centre. Paid from Monday to Saturday, usually from 08:00 to 20:00.
- Green (Žalioji): The cheapest zone on the outskirts of the centre. Paid from Monday to Friday, usually from 08:00 to 18:00.
- Parking meters (Parkomatai): Found in every zone. Most accept coins and contactless card payments. The ticket must be placed behind the windscreen.
- Mobile apps (THE MOST CONVENIENT OPTION): Download the m.Parking app. It lets you pay for the exact time you are parked, extend it remotely and avoid hunting for a meter. This is the solution used by almost all residents.
- Underground and multi-storey car parks: In the city centre you will find several large, convenient underground car parks (e.g. under Cathedral Square or on Gediminas Avenue). They are more expensive but guarantee a free space and security.
A day trip to Trakai Once you have mastered driving around Vilnius, it is time for a real adventure. Just 30 km west of the capital lies Trakai Castle – one of the most beautiful places in all of Europe.
- Getting there (approx. 30–40 minutes): The route is straightforward. From Vilnius, head for the A16 road. It is a good, wide road that will take you straight there.
- Why visit? The island castle on Lake Galvė looks like something out of a fairy tale. It is the historical capital of Lithuania and the centre of Karaim culture – a small, fascinating ethnic group.
- What to do in Trakai? Visit the castle and discover its fascinating history. Try kibinai (kybyns) – traditional Karaim pastries filled with meat, which are a local delicacy. Hire a rowing boat or a pedalo and see the castle from the lake. Look for authentic souvenirs made of linen and amber.
- Parking in Trakai: There are several large paid car parks at the entrance to the town. Leave your car there and walk the rest of the way to the castle, enjoying the views.
