By Car Around Gdańsk

Along the Lighthouse Trail. An Unforgettable Road Trip Along the Polish Coast from Gdańsk.

The Baltic Sea has something magical about it. It's not just the sound of waves and the endless horizon, but also history whispered by the wind and tales of ships seeking a safe harbour. For centuries, their silent, luminous guardians have been lighthouses – structures full of mystery, rugged beauty and fascinating stories.

What if you were to leave the beaten track for a while and set off on a journey in their footsteps? Imagine a multi-day road trip where each day you discover another one of these remarkable towers, learn their stories, and immerse yourself in the authentic atmosphere of the Polish coast.

This isn't a plan for a package holiday. This is a scenario for an adventure where the keys are in your own hands. We begin at Gdańsk airport. The goal: unforgettable memories and a collection of photos that everyone will envy.

.

Why is a car the key to this adventure?

Before we hit the road, let's answer one question: why is renting a car in Gdańsk the best way to make this plan happen? The answer is simple: freedom.

  • You reach places others can't: Many lighthouses and charming coastal spots are difficult to access by public transport. A car gives you the freedom to reach every one of them, without worrying about timetables.
  • You travel at your own pace: Found the perfect beach and want to stay two hours longer? Or maybe a small harbour is serving the best fish you've ever tasted? With a car, you are the master of your own time.
  • You discover more: A trip isn't just about points A and B. It's everything that happens in between. With a car you can spontaneously turn down a side road, stop on a cliff to admire a sunset, or discover a small family-run smokehouse.
  • Comfort and convenience: No need to worry about luggage. You can comfortably pack your camera, drone, a warmer jacket for breezy evenings and everything you need to fully enjoy your journey.

The Itinerary: 3 Days with Lighthouses in the Spotlight

Our base is Gdańsk Airport car rental. Pick up the keys and you're off. We've split the route into three days so the journey is a pleasure, not a race.

Day 1: The Vistula Spit – Land of Two Waters (approx. 140 km round trip)

On the first day we head east, to one of the most unique corners of Poland.

  • Destination: Krynica Morska Lighthouse
After leaving Gdańsk, take the S7 road and then the turn-off onto route 501. The drive along the Vistula Spit itself is a remarkable experience – on your left you have the waters of the Gulf of Gdańsk, and on your right the Vistula Lagoon. The lighthouse at Krynica is a beautiful red 26.5-metre tower offering an absolutely stunning view. As one of the few lighthouses that allows you to see the open sea and the vast lagoon simultaneously, climbing to the top is a must.
  • What else is along the way?
    - Stutthof Museum in Sztutowo: A place for reflection and an important history lesson well worth a visit.
    - Vistula Spit Canal: See the impressive new construction project with your own eyes.
    - Beach at Piaski: The last village on the Polish part of the spit. This is where you'll find the wildest and least crowded beaches.

Day 2: The Heart of the Tricity and the Start of the Peninsula (approx. 80 km)

The second day is a blend of history, urban buzz and a first encounter with the Hel Peninsula.

  • Destination 1: Gdańsk Nowy Port Lighthouse
This is one of the most beautiful and historically significant lighthouses in Poland. It was from its top that shots were fired towards Westerplatte in 1939. Today it can be visited, and from its gallery you can admire the view of the port and Westerplatte.
  • Destination 2: Sopot and its "lighthouse"
Although it has officially lost its lighthouse status, the tower by the Sopot pier is still called a lighthouse and offers a fantastic viewpoint over the Gulf of Gdańsk, the pier and the Grand Hotel. Definitely worth it!
  • Destination 3: Władysławowo and the start of the Peninsula
After exploring the Tricity, we head north. We pass through Puck and arrive at Władysławowo, the gateway to the Hel Peninsula.

Day 3: The Hel Peninsula and the Grand Finale at Rozewie (approx. 100 km)

The last day is the quintessence of a seaside adventure and an encounter with a legend.

  • Destination 1: Hel Red Lighthouse
The octagonal tower stands proudly above a pine forest at the very tip of Poland. Climbing to the top rewards you with a spectacular panorama – you can see the meeting point of the gulf and the open sea.
  • Destination 2: Jastarnia Lighthouse
This is the lowest lighthouse on the Polish coast. Unfortunately it is closed to visitors, but it's well worth seeing from the outside.
  • Destination 3: Rozewie Lighthouse
The Grand Finale. This is a true legend and the oldest lighthouse on the Polish coast. It is here, according to tradition, that Stefan Żeromski wrote "Wind from the Sea". The lighthouse at Rozewie is in fact a complex of two lighthouses and a fascinating museum.

Plan your trip – practical tips for the road

To make your lighthouse road trip pure pleasure, it's worth keeping a few details in mind. Think of this as your checklist before you set off.

  • Best time to travel: If you have the option, plan your trip for June or September. The weather is still beautiful and you'll avoid the peak holiday season. This means less traffic and easier parking.
  • The ideal car for this route: A comfortable compact or compact SUV works best. It will be comfortable enough for longer stretches while agile enough to navigate the narrow roads of the Hel Peninsula without stress.
  • The Lighthouse Explorer's Essentials: Beyond the standard kit, pack three things that will transform your sightseeing: binoculars, a windproof jacket, and very comfortable shoes.
  • Check opening hours: This is crucial! Lighthouses have varying, often seasonal opening hours. Before you set off, spend 5 minutes checking current tower visiting hours online.
