The key to success is understanding Spain's colour-coded game

The first and most important rule of parking on Spanish city streets is understanding the line colours that mark the parking zones. It's not complicated – think of it as a simple game where the colour tells you everything you need to know.

Blue Zone (Zona Azul / ORA)

This is the most common paid parking zone in city centres and near beaches. If you see blue lines, it means you have to pay for your stay.

How does it work? Find the nearest parking meter (Sp. parquímetro). Pay for the time you need (usually a maximum of 2 hours) and place the ticket on your dashboard in a visible spot.

Hours of operation. The zone is only paid during specific hours, which are always shown on the sign or meter. It's usually something like 9:00–14:00 and 16:00–20:00. Remember the Spanish siesta – between 14:00 and 16:00, parking is often free! On weekends and public holidays, parking is also frequently free. Always check the signs!

White Zone (Zona Blanca)

This is your holy grail – white lines mean free parking spaces with no time restrictions.

Where to find them? They're usually located further from the city centre, in residential areas. If you don't mind a 10–15 minute walk, this is the best and cheapest way to park.

Note! Always glance at nearby signs. Sometimes, though rarely, there may be additional restrictions – for example, no parking on the days when a local market (mercado) is held.

Green Zone (Zona Verde)

Green lines are a zone intended primarily for residents (residentes) who hold the appropriate permit.

Can tourists park here? Sometimes yes, but it is usually very expensive and time-limited (e.g. to 1 hour). In general, if you're not sure of the rules, our advice is simple: avoid green zones. The risk of a fine or a high charge is too great.

Yellow Line (Línea Amarilla)

Remember this colour. A solid or broken yellow line painted on the kerb means an absolute no stopping or parking zone. Don't park here even "just for five minutes". It's the quickest way to get a fine or, in the worst case, have your car towed – which means significant costs and stress.

Underground car parks – when are they worth it?

Sometimes circling for a free street space is simply a waste of precious holiday time. That's when underground car parks (parking subterráneo) come to the rescue.

When is it worth using one?

• When you plan to spend a few hours or a whole day in the city centre.
• When you need to park overnight and your hotel doesn't offer parking.
• When the heat is unbearable – leaving your car in the shade is a real luxury.
• When you value safety and convenience.

Where to find them in Alicante? Look for signs with a large white "P" on a blue background. The main car parks are near Mercado Central, the El Corte Inglés department store, and by the port.

How much does it cost? Prices are higher than on the street and are usually charged per minute. Realistically, expect to pay between 15 and 25 euros per day. Sometimes special offers are available for longer stays. While this may seem like a lot, it often buys you complete peace of mind.

How to park along the Costa Blanca?

Once you pick up your car from our car hire at Alicante Airport and head off to explore the coastline, the rules of the game change slightly.

Charming towns (Altea, Calpe, Villajoyosa). The pattern is similar. The closer you are to the old town (casco antiguo) and the beach, the more blue zones you'll find. The golden rule is to park a little further away in a white zone and enjoy a short walk.

Beaches and coves. Many popular beaches have large, often free or very cheap car parks (so-called descampados – simply compacted ground). In summer it's worth arriving early to get the best spot. Never drive onto the beach itself or onto dune areas – this is strictly penalised!

Nature parks and hiking trails. Always use the designated car parks. Leaving your car on the verge in a nature reserve is asking for a fine and shows a lack of respect for nature.

What to do if you get a fine?

It can happen. A moment of inattention, a misread sign. If you find a "gift" from the traffic wardens under your windscreen wiper, don't panic.

Check if you can cancel the fine! This is the most important tip. If the fine is for exceeding your paid time in a blue zone (and not too much time has passed, e.g. an hour), you can often "cancel" it (anulación de denuncia). Simply go to the nearest parking meter, press the appropriate button and pay a small fee (usually 3–6 euros). This is far cheaper than the full fine (50–100 euros)!

How to pay a fine? If cancellation isn't possible, the fine can be paid online, at a bank, or at a post office. Usually there is information about a 50% discount for prompt payment.

A fine on a hire car. If you don't pay the fine, it will be forwarded to us as the vehicle owner. In accordance with the rental agreement, we are required to provide the driver's details, and the fine amount plus an administration fee will be charged to your card. It's always better to deal with this on the spot straight away.
