Malaga and surroundings by car – 5 places worth discovering

Malaga and Costa del Sol have enough attractions for several days, but if you have a car, you'll quickly discover that the most interesting places extend well beyond the coastline itself.

In the inland province, rocky landscapes, white villages, peaceful mountain roads and places that look completely different from seaside resorts await you. Some are perfect for half a day, others are worth treating as the main goal of your entire trip.

If you pick up your car at Málaga-Costa del Sol airport upon arrival, you can head straight to your accommodation or plan several days away from the city without having to return for your car later.

Here are five destinations worth adding to your list.

1. Antequera and El Torcal – two completely different places in one day

Antequera works well when you want to combine a historic city with nature.

The biggest contrast to the urban part of your trip is the nearby El Torcal de Antequera – an area known for its distinctive limestone rock formations.

On site, you can choose one of the marked hiking trails and see a landscape that is completely different from coastal Malaga.

How to plan this day?

A good idea is to start at El Torcal.

After your walk, you can drive down to Antequera, have lunch and take a stroll through the historic part of the city. This way, in one trip you get two different things: nature and city sightseeing.

However, don't try to squeeze too many extra points into your plan. The drive itself, the walk and Antequera are more than enough for a full day.

Choose this destination if: you love landscapes, easy hiking trails and want to see something completely different from Costa del Sol.

2. Mijas Pueblo – a classic white village overlooking the coast

Mijas Pueblo sits on a hill above Costa del Sol and is one of the easiest ways to see the characteristic white architecture of Andalusia without organizing a long trip.

Best to leave your car and set off on foot.

White facades, small squares, narrow streets and views of the coast mean you don't need an elaborate plan here.

A short stop or half a day?

That depends on your travel pace.

You can treat Mijas as a brief stop during a longer journey west or stay for a few hours, have lunch and simply take a walk.

There's no need to tick off more points. Mijas' greatest appeal is precisely the atmosphere of the village.

Choose this destination if: you want to see a pueblo blanco relatively close to Malaga and combine it with Costa del Sol.

3. Setenil de las Bodegas – a village built under cliffs

Setenil de las Bodegas is one of the most distinctive destinations in this part of Andalusia.

The lower part of the town is built directly along a rocky gorge. Houses, bars and shops use natural rock overhangs as part of the building – in places, huge rock formations literally hang over the street and building roofs.

This is where you'll find the most famous streets Calle Cuevas del Sol and Calle Cuevas de la Sombra.

What to do in Setenil?

Most importantly, give yourself time for a walk.

Don't come just for one photo under the rocks. The most interesting part is moving between the lower part of the town and the higher-lying streets and observing how the buildings have been adapted to the terrain.

It's worth stopping for a coffee or lunch right in the part of town built under the rocks.

Is it worth traveling that far?

If you're looking for a place you won't mistake for any other – absolutely.

Setenil works well as the main goal of your day. However, I wouldn't try to combine it with several other major attractions just to
